back 4 blood children of the worm introduces a new, human foe

Back 4 Blood’ Children of the Worm arrives today and, surprisingly, it’s set to really shake things up.

We weren’t all that struck by Back 4 Blood when we reviewed it – yes, it was decent enough but there were several issues preventing it from being as entertaining as Left 4 Dead, its spiritual prequel. In particular, the way it throws monster after monster at you, with little real consideration for tension, put us off. That’s why Back 4 Blood’s second expansion, Children of the Worm, has our attention.

Children of the Worm looks to be a more evenly paced affair, not least because it’s pitting you against human foes. The Children of the Worm are, as we suspected, a cult who revere in the infected and they form the basis of a whole new campaign.

Yes, they’re human, which should, in theory, make the standard foes easier to fell, but they’re also capable of toting weapons. The trailer shows the squad shooter’s protagonists pausing to avoid a watchtower guard’s laser sight, suggesting that just wading in will make you very dead, very quickly.

New enemies aside, Back 4 Blood Children of the Worm also introduces a new Cleaner, Prophet Dan, who sports a fanciful moustache and a dodgy faux-Irish accent. You can check out the trailer above and get your hands on the DLC, which requires the full game, later today, on on its own or as part of the Back 4 Blood Annual Pass, Back 4 Blood: Deluxe Edition or Back 4 Blood: Ultimate Edition.

Back 4 Blood is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC (via Steam).
