Creative director “Bartek” Lesiakowski just gave curious fans their first official look at gameplay for The Last Case of Benedict Fox, a Metroidvania and Lovecraftian indie game.

You can watch all five minutes of the First Look on the devs’ official YouTube channel:

The developers are Rogue Games, an indie studio that hasn’t quite made its mark just yet. However, it recently made some headlines by announcing Cookie Cutterlast week, another Metroidvania release that focuses on punk-rock.

The Last Case of Benedict Fox is going in a very different direction. Although Benedict will have special powers and fight a variety of demons, the tone and pacing focuses more on mystery and lore.

The new first look begins by inviting players to investigate an abandoned mansion for dark secrets about your past. Early on, a demon from another dimension shows up, with a voice not unlike Vecna from Stranger Things. This demon will be the player’s companion throughout the game.

They’ll have their own agenda, but they give supernatural gifts to your protagonist Benedict, such as inhuman ground pounds and leaps. Benedict will also be able to access memories of the dead.

These memories are physically traversed, a representation of their emotions, resulting in serious danger. Benedict is sent into a Limbo realm full of demons that must be defeated in various ways. Players also need to collect loot in this realm to return to the real world, and find more clues.

Overall, the art style has a fair budget and occasionally feels similar to Inside, with its gloomy imagery. But the colors also seem less menacing than that, more interested in surrealism than fear.

That’s fair, given that most of the terror from Lovecraft was its ambiguity, confusion and mystery. The game is expected to be released on Xbox and PC sometime next year.
